This is something I never thought too much about until after about 15 years of freelancing, but I wish I had looked at it much earlier.
As a freelancer I thought I was doing good, because I could pay my bills every month. But I was really falling behind. A few times with taxes, often with work/life balance, and a more recent revelation with retirement plans (almost 40). I had $0 saved for retirement until I recently started a full-time job with 401k matching.
Making freelance work is more than just getting by every month -- you need to be getting ahead, and also finding some work life / balance. I was grinding away in my 20's and 30's into the late night, but now I look forward to having some mental time off (where I don't have to worry about whether I am making money today or not).
I was really falling behind for most of my freelance career -- how about you?
