As a freelancer, I sometimes come across a particular type of client. Instead of contracting me to do specific work and then deliver that work, the client will instead want to hire me for consultation services over Skype.
e.g. The client will put it, "I will do the work and construct all the output myself, but would like you to be available over Skype to consult with me and let me know how I'm doing".
When it comes to working with clients like these, my intuition tells me that they want to save money by doing work themselves, but Skype with me for guidance on ongoing issues.
Is this type of project advisable to take on? A couple of clients have been reasonable with this type of arrangement, and while I wasn't doing all the work I got paid in accordance with the hours I consulted.
However, I have also found that other clients will take it as an invitation to contact you at inappropriate hours, so the nature of the job is unpredictable as far as timing goes. Moreover, the client doesn't have to commit to a particular workload since they are paying you for ad hoc questions, i.e. they could say that they anticipate they will need 20 hours of consultation but actually stop after 2, etc.
Has anyone had significant experience with this type of contract, and is it one that is advisable to take on?
